FORMALITIES
Clearance
The authorities must be advised of one's ETA and the vessel must proceed without stopping to an official port of entry. Boats coming from the south should keep well away from the Burmese coast after leaving Thai territorial waters and only head inshore when ready to enter Victoria Point Harbour. Stopping at any islands is prohibited and should be avoided.
A trip permit must be obtained in advance: application must be made to Yangoon and then to Nay Pyi Daw the New Capital to pay the fee for a two year permit that can cover three yachts contact mergui@mail4u.com.mm. Before arrival one must email a full crew and passenger list to Yangon and a photocopy faxed to the agent at the port of entry Kawntaung. Also on arrival one must hand over 20 copies of the crew and passenger list plus pay a 5500 Baht (+/- 144US$) entry fee. Also required is a Burmese Guide on the boat.
All nationals require visas, the length of stay being granted is not more than 28 days. Visas can be obtained from Myanmar embassies in Bangok Kuala Lumpur or Singapore.
Visas are valid from three months from the date of issue.
Customs
Inspections are thorough and firearms as well as valuables should be declared.
Health
Cholera is a serious risk. Malaria, as well as tuberculosis, hepatitis, and other infectious diseases are endemic in most parts of the country.
Medical facilities are inadequate for even routine medical care. There are few trained medical personnel. Most foreign drugs on sale have been smuggled into the country, and are often counterfeit or adulterated and thus unsafe to use.
Documents
A permit must be obtained in advance. The fee for one boat is the same as for three boats and requires trips to Yangon and Nay Pyi Daw New Capital to organise the permit and make the payment. This covers the three vessels.
Internet connections are available at GEC building right in front of the jetty in Victoria Point. All information goes through government gateway and is subject to scrutiny.
