Frederique Lengaigne and Klaus Reisinger take their cameras to one
of Earth’s last frontiers: the Mergui archipelago of Myanmar, the
country once known as Burma. The largely uncharted chain of more
than 800 islands, cradled by pristine reefs and turquoise waters,
has recently been declared off-limits to outsiders by the country’s
government. Few people have ever seen the islands, except for the
Moken—seafaring nomads who survive on the bounty of the sea. For
months, the filmmakers trail the elusive nomads, explore their
ancient customs, encounter rare and endangered animals, and witness
the transformation of wild Myanmar—and perhaps the Moken themselves.
